Congratulations to Kirstie Gardener and Brooke Thomas on the successful completion of their Open Water Diving Course! Accomplished divers, the girls demonstrated a very keen and conscientious approach to diving and learning about the unique and wonderful marine life of our coastline.

Congratulations to Phil Lentfer and Nigel Everest on their successful completion of the PADI EANx (Enriched Air/Nitrox) Certification.

Congratulations also to Nikki Ah Wong for finally blowing bubbles again after more than 30 year. Nikki had previously learnt to dive as teenager in New Zealand!

FORSTER MARCH 2010

SOCIAL DIVING with the SHARKS No: 1

Our first SHARK Diving trip of 2009 was typically a memorable experience. We always look forward to these annual trips and Ron, Dave and the Sharks did not disappoint. Warm weather, clear skies and with quite flat seas ensured we were in for a wonderful trip.

Although there was patches / layers of algae blooms, visibility often exceeded 25m. In the grotto at Big Seal Rocks there was at least a dozen sharks in a very small area. Circling through schools of roughies and then drifting within a few inches of your face was truley awesome to witness. Due to the algae and 'dirtier' water around the sharks meant they were less timid and very happy to swim in VERY close for a look.

Nigel was able to take some fantastic video scenes. In all we would have seen over 50 sharks in our 4 dives.

NELSON BAY FEBRUARY 2010

SOCIAL DIVING - Pics by Jason Nicholls.

As Grant predicted - the conditions for this trip were fantastic! Clear blue warm skies, 20m visibility and consistent 24C to 25C water temps!

Grant was able to catch-up with Jerry from Dive Adventures again, who surprisingly had never dived this part of the world before, but naturally loved it. Jerry wants to be back diving Nelson Bay with Mudgee Dive and Travel as soon as he possibly can.

Diving the Seahorse Gardens we saw a dozen or so seahorses and even more pipefish. Some seahorses were pregnant. In a couple of months time they will of course mostly 'disappear' for the winter months.

Maori-Cod

On the SS Oakland we had some tremendous conditions with calm seas, 25m + viz (you could see the surface from the sea floor) 25C water. On the way down were masses of fishes swarming in the open water that casually parted as you swam down the anchor line.

There were some huge cnidaria (sea jellies) and a lot of fiddler rays and shovel noses rays amongst the flathead on the sand surrounding the wreck as well as the usual individual and large schools of fishes.

 NELSON BAY JANUARY 2010

OPEN WATER COURSE and SOCIAL DIVING

The first trip of the year was an exciting one - the first trip for Michelle and Everly since the birth in May and hence Everly's first trip to the beach - naturally she had an absolute ball.
It was terrific to finally catch up with Mike and Wendy Cufor and family. Likewise, it was great to welcome in the first dives of the new year with Phil, Nigel and Gabby and my trusty gear washer - Jake MacM.

Congratulations to Kate McQuiggin and Maddy Young on the successful completion of your Open Water Courses. It is a pretty inspiring experience to swim with turtles, sea horses and angler fish along with all the other marine life of Nelson Bay during your very first experiences in the underwater world.
Further congratulations to Amanda J for completing that elusive 100th dive.! Welcome also to newcomer Keiran.

Saturday afternoon the more experienced divers headed off in 25C water to explore a 'new' dive site The Seahorse Gardens. We found around 15 seahorses including several carrying the distict tagging by marine biologist Dave Harasti. We are looking forward to returning with camera's in tow to take pictures of the Ghost Pipefish.
