Fishing has largely been criticised in recent years due to the environmental impacts of over-fishing. There is no doubt that commercial stocks of most fish in most fishing grounds are severely depleted and arguably in a majority of instances drastically over-fished.

Fishing is unquestionably, the largest recreational activity in the world and this is especially true in Australia. Like all activities, it is the 1% that give a bad name to the 99% and fishers are no different.

Spearfishing is perhaps the most environmentally friendly form of fishing. Unlike other recreational fishing activities, the species to be captured can be specially targeted to ensure there is no harm or inadvertent taking of under sized or protected species. Done correctly, spearfishing is perhaps the most ethical form of fishing.

Nevertheless it is up to the individual spear fisher to follow sound guidelines and practices. Before pulling the trigger:

* be 100% sure of the species

* be 100% sure the fish is not undersize

* never indiscriminately and unnecessarily harm marine life

* don't harass other fish and marine life

* tread carefully, to not damage any marine life under foot and certainly NEVER stand on living corals

* if the fish has not died with the initial shot, kill the fish as matter of urgency as leaving it alive is cruel, unethical and unnecessary. It is also a great way to attract sharks and other predators.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT

Mudgee Dive and Travel stocks a great range of spearfishing equipment and products. We have everything you need to get started or to upgrade to 'bigger and better'.

SPEARGUNS
Spear guns are available in a range of different sizes that are suitable for targeting different size fish and depths. An optimum size for a beginner would be something around the 1.1m.

EXPOSURE PROTECTION
Wetsuits
provide insulation against the cold. Dive Gloves provide additional warmth but importantly when spearfishing they allow the spearo to safely hold and handle fish. Hoods provide additional warmth to the head and as most heat is lost here, the hood is especially important.

SOFTWEAR
Good quality mask and snorkels are important. Masks allows you to see underwater, whilst the snorkel allows you to breath.
Fins propel you through that water making it easier and faster to swim. Most spear fishers prefer the long blade fins as they provide more power for less effort.

SAFETY EQUIPMENT
High visibility floats or marker buoys are essential for warning boats and other marine traffic of your presence to avoid unnecessary mishaps.
A Dive Knife is used to kill the fish once it has been speared, making it a vital piece of the equipment for the ethical spear fisher.

SPARES AND OTHER ACCESSORIES
Without inexpensive and easy to carry spare parts a great days fishing can be unnecessarily ended.
